Green Run golfer carried a little more state pressure

During this year's high school golf season, Green Run's Walter Smith III had to learn how to blaze a trail or two - and not just because he was the Stallions' No. 1 golfer as a 15-year-old sophomore. As the underclassman dealt with the pressure of carrying his team through the Beach District season, Smith became the Beach's first African American golfer in 30 years to qualify for the state tournament. "It's an achievement," Smith said. "But I didn't want to think about it that way to put even more pressure on myself." Smith placed fifth among golfers who were not from the top two teams from the Eastern Region to punch his ticket to Richmond's Independence Golf Club, which hosted the tournament from Oct. 12 to Oct. 14. read more...
